Davison-Designed Products Sold by KB Toys

As time goes on, Davison has continued to add to its list of retailers at a rapid rate.  In August of 2011, only a few months after Davison announced that it had reached 900 different stores that sold Davison products and packaging solutions, Ross and Shop NBC were added to the list, bringing the total count to 1,000.

“It started with an idea to get an invention to the stores one day,” said founder and CEO George Davison.  “The light at the end of the tunnel was so far away, I didn’t know if we’d ever reach it.   We climbed that hill, and we’re smashing through 1,000 stores today!”

One of the retail outlets that have sold multiple Davison-designed products is KB Toys.  Founded in 1922, KB Toys, originally named Kay Bee Toys, was started in Pittsfield, Massachusetts by the Kaufman Brothers. A mall-based retail toy store chain, KB Toys established itself with three formats: KB Toys, KB Toy Works, and KB Toys Outlet, providing cost-effective toys and games to its customers.

Davison-designed Trik Stiks have been sold by KB Toys. Developed by a Davison client initially as an alternative to ramps and other stationary extreme sports obstacles, Trik Stiks offer the user a variety of benefits over the traditional obstacle. Ramps and rails, being mostly built in place, are unable to be moved around. Even when ramps are transportable, they are often unwieldy due to their size.

Trik Stiks were developed as a way to offer extreme sports enthusiasts a product with a changing challenge level depending on the user’s preference. The lightweight design of the Trik Stik makes it easy to carry, and its two-piece construction means that if the user does not jump high enough, the obstacle will move out of the way, instead of tripping the skater or skateboarder up. The sticks feature a stable base and their compact design means that they can be positioned between other obstacles or used on their own.

Another product that Davison helped to produce, the Aviva Arctic Blast, has been sold through KB Toys. Aviva approached Davison with the actual product completed, needing new packaging. The Arctic Blast had dull, drab photographs on its packaging which did not adequately convey the product’s attractive qualities.

Davison created an innovative packaging design for the Arctic Blast that featured colorful graphics and a realistic image of the inflatable two-person sled in use. By letting the customer see a picture of the excitement of the Arctic Blast in use, the product was much more engaging, and has been sold through multiple retailers including KB Toys.

Along with the Arctic Blast, Davison also re-designed the packaging for the Aviva Penguin Igloo, which has also been sold through KB Toy stores. The Penguin Igloo is an inflatable winter toy by the Aviva company, with a solid base to keep it in place during play. Much like the Arctic Blast, the graphics on the original packaging failed to bring the benefits of the toy to life, so Davison devised packaging with a realistic photo backdrop of a winter scene and the Penguin Igloo product being played with by an excited animated family. The new packaging demonstrates not only the features of the product, but also the excitement derived from using it.

“I find it extremely rewarding to be able to help the everyday ‘idea person’ bring their idea for a new product to life, and then hear their reaction after they actually see it in packaging and on the store shelf,” said Mr. Davison. “There’s nothing more exciting.”

A typical project is not licensed, sold in stores or profitable.
